Kraus-Anderson begins construction on Hatton Eielson Public School, replacing 109-year-old building in Hatton, ND
KA helped to secure $6.3 million referendum
BEMIDJI, Minn. (August 2018) – The Bemidji office of Kraus-Anderson (KA), one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest commercial general contractors and construction managers, has begun construction on the new Hatton Eielson Public School in Hatton, located 75 miles north of Fargo in eastern N.D.
KA also served as referendum consultants for the $6.3 million, K-12 Hatton school project, which was overwhelmingly approved by more than 90 percent of the voters.
The yearlong project will replace the aging, wood-framed 109-year-old school that has indoor air quality, lighting, noise and technology infrastructure deficiencies that impact student learning and opportunities. There also is a shortage of physical education, assembly and community and fitness spaces, as well as multiple floors with poor access for students who receive special education. In addition, no fire suppression system, and poor security and visitor monitoring creates a potentially dangerous situation for students and staff.
The new 23,000-square-foot school will improve and expand learning spaces and student opportunities and will prepare students to compete for jobs in a world that is very different than when the existing school was built. Designed by ICON Architectural Group of Grand Forks, the new reconfigured space will improve function, efficiency and space utilization. Features include:
o Improved indoor air quality, thermal, lighting, noise issues and technology infrastructure to improve student learning;
o New music room, gymnasium, cafeteria and kitchen to expand opportunities for physical education, athletics, community and fitness activities, and to promote lifelong wellness habits;
o Will serve as an effective attraction and retention tool for students and teachers with updated functionality and aesthetics that create a warm, welcoming and educationally sound environment;
o Will provide accessible special education programs on ground level without needing to climb stairs;
o Electronic security monitoring at each exterior entrance and exit. Administration and main offices are located adjacent to front entrances to require visitors to check in at offices prior to entering;
o Fire suppression (sprinkler) system throughout the building.
Kevin Rogers, Hatton Eielson School Board’s superintendent, says the project is the most economical way to meet the needs of our students and maintain the future of our community now and for years to come.
Construction is expected to be completed in July 2019.
