Downtime does not exist in the 24/7 news cycle. So when Hubbard Broadcasting’s ABC 6 News in Rochester decided to make the move to a bigger and better station space, Kraus-Anderson got the job. KA’s Rochester office team recently completed a fast-track, 9,000 s.f. tenant improvement buildout to create the station’s new offices and studios in Rochester, Minnesota.
ABC 6 News moved from an existing office to the new facility, located at 1300 16th St. SW, in December following an aggressive 11-week schedule that included demolition of the existing space, new electrical/mechanical, new exterior cut openings for windows and entry, metal stud framing, drywall, pipe grid ceilings, paint, flooring, wall tile, caseworks, specialties and high image finishes. Architect was Sperides Reiners.
Project manager Andy Johnson detailed the project.
Q: What benefits does the new station provide?
JOHNSON: The new ABC 6 News space is triple the size of the former station, and provides state of the art capabilities with high definition-ready studios, news and sales departments under one roof.
Q: What are some of the highlights?
JOHNSON: The front entry façade is a steel structure with metal mesh and features a LumenPulse light fixture that presents an array of LED colors.
JOHNSON: ABC 6 News was going high-definition for the first time, which meant some unknowns for the users. We needed to get the build-out done as quickly as possible, so they had plenty of time to test this new technology.
Q: How did you accommodate the TV station’s aggressive schedule for move-in?
JOHNSON: We began letting the ABC 6 News Engineering crew into the studio and director’s control areas in late November as they needed as much time as possible to prepare for their January 31 “live” date. Once they pulled the plug on their old studio, there was no turning back, so they used the time to set up and test the system. Even with multiple owner-directed scope changes on the project, we still were able to open the studio up to their engineering department for their crucial test period.
