MCA Award of Excellence for Alexandria High School
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (January 29, 2015) – Alexandria High School in Alexandria, Minnesota has received a 2015 Award of Excellence from the Minnesota Construction Association (MCA). The 283,000-square-foot senior high school was constructed by Kraus-Anderson and designed by Cuningham Group Architects. The award recognizes construction projects over $10 million that make substantial contributions to the community.
The new school opened in September 2014 and replaced the district’s Jefferson High School, initially built in 1957. KA worked closely with the architects, school and community to create a shared vision for “The World’s Greatest High School.”
Built to LEED Silver standards, the school was created to be adaptable for the future and designed to be a flexible environment with collaborative learning spaces and commons areas, which provide the opportunity to change as education paradigms shift.
The school’s open environment and flexible, streamlined elements mirror popular design trends in corporate offices. The building features two 3-story academic wings with 36 classrooms, 12 learning spaces for small and large groups, science labs, technology and engineering lab, art rooms, media center and special education classrooms. Energy efficiency systems include a central HVAC control system and abundant daylighting.
Enrichment amenities include new athletic fields and a stadium, activities wing with a 5-court gymnasium, 1,000-seat auditorium, dedicated wrestling room, fitness lab and performing arts wing with dedicated music spaces, kitchen and cafeteria.
The new facility will also host activities and events for the public and community organizations.
