La Crosse Center Wins 2022 BUILD Wisconsin Award

The La Crosse Center received a 2022 BUILD Wisconsin Award for its recent renovation and expansion project.

The original building was more than 40 years old and long overdue for major renovations.

Designed by ISG Architects, the two-year project expanded the sports, entertainment, and event center into 120,000 square feet of multipurpose space.

The updated lobby now offers a more inviting place for visitors to gather, complete with high ceilings, large windows, and a mural highlighting two of La Crosse’s main attractions, Grandad Bluff and the Mississippi River.

The refurbishment targeted areas, such as the Riverside Ballroom, roof-top terrace, atrium, meeting rooms/office spaces, and pre-function area which now features full-height windows around the perimeter and showcases beautiful Mississippi River views.

Kraus-Anderson completely renovated the existing arena— replacing all of the seating; installing a higher quality sound system, ADA-compliant platforms and railings; and upgrading and enlarging the dressing rooms, locker rooms, restrooms, and concession stands.

PROJECT CHALLENGES OVERCOME

  • COVID-19 — The project team adjusted to COVID-19 circumstances quickly. The large job site allowed employees to maintain social distance. The team worked four 10-hour days, allowing individuals time to monitor their health over a three-day weekend. Construction carried on as scheduled, with health and safety at the forefront.
  • Unforeseen debris — As the team excavated for the ballroom column footings, they encountered debris from pre-existing buildings. Kraus-Anderson further excavated the rubble-filled areas — introducing the difficulty of groundwater — until they found quality soil. At some footing locations, the team excavated 20+ feet below grade before finding good soil. Kraus-Anderson expertly cleared the debris, taking advantage of the winter’s low water table, and verified with the engineer that they could begin backfilling clear stone and suitable soil.
  • Phased project — Kraus-Anderson completed the project in phases, so the Center could remain operational, frequently coordinating event-goer traffic. Kraus-Anderson secured the job site area — making certain those in and around it always felt safe and comfortable.

SUSTAINABILITY

Green initiatives include solar paneling, low-energy lighting throughout the building, and an energy-efficient HVAC system.

The Center’s close proximity to downtown allows individuals to visit dining, lodging, shopping, and more by foot, reducing the need for a car when visiting. The accessible location adds to the building’s sustainability efforts and will make a daily, long-term impact.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

The pre-construction process lasted many years before the project commenced. Kraus-Anderson, ISG Inc., and the La Crosse Center’s leadership developed a strong relationship with the City of La Crosse. The various parties underwent multiple design iterations before ultimately landing on its current design. The long-term process meant Kraus-Anderson and ISG Inc. spent a lot of time delving into the community’s wants and needs, ultimately creating a space for all to enjoy and utilize.

In addition to sporting events and concerts, the newly expanded La Crosse Center will be a popular venue to host weddings, conferences, trade shows, and other events, making a positive economic impact on the city and region.

La Crosse now competes with other convention centers throughout the Midwest for hospitality and business thanks to the renovated facility and serves as a landmark of which La Crosse and surrounding communities are proud.

Associated General Contractors Wisconsin recognized the La Crosse Center and its project team at an event in October.
