Kraus-Anderson to build 32 modular classrooms for Williston, N.D. schools to address oil boom population growth
WILLISTON, N.D. (May 2012) — Kraus-Anderson Construction Company (KA), one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest commercial general contractors and construction managers, has been selected to build 32 modular classrooms for Williston, N.D. schools in response to the oil boom town’s skyrocketing population growth.
The modular classrooms will be built on six acres on two separate sites, including 24 modular classrooms at the McVay Elementary School facility and eight at the junior/senior high school, for a total of about 34,000 square feet of classroom space, playgrounds and parking. The McVay school currently operates the district’s Head Start program, which will be relocated. Construction begins mid-May for completion by fall.
Emergency state funds of $3 million have been secured for the district’s expansion. Williston school enrollment is currently at 2,635 students, having gained 300 this year and 150 in the previous year. School superintendent Viola LaFontaine estimates the district will grow by another 800 to 1,200 students by next fall.
KA is drawing on its emergency response capabilities, mobilizing, assessing and assisting the district in managing this crisis, even as it continues to serve in flood recovery efforts for Minot Public Schools, which is rebuilding after following flooding at six of its facilities in 2011.
“Not every emergency is weather-related,” said John Huenink, vice president and director of Kraus-Anderson’s education group. “But the same quick response resources we drew on to help Minot with its flood recovery efforts will serve us well as we help Williston manage its population boom.”
