University of Minnesota Duluth Sports and Health Center
The two-story project comprises 49,617 s.f. of new construction and 47,445 s.f. of remodeling to the existing building. Faced with an accelerated construction schedule, ongoing use requirements and tight staging area between the building, road and adjacent football stadium, strong communication was essential to the success of the project. Throughout the process, the project team stayed in close communication with UMD staff, faculty and students, so all could anticipate needs and schedule accordingly.
The project includes a climbing wall, offices, tennis courts, volleyball courts, elevator, fitness and weight rooms, activity rooms, men’s and women’s locker and showers. The new building is connected to three different aged buildings, all of which have different elevations. The building was designed with extensive use of floor to ceiling glass, non-typical for a building with basketball courts. The buildings central focal point is an interior climbing wall that has a unique skylight directly above. The Minnesota Construction Association (MCA) recognized this project in 2007 with an Award of Excellence.
