Kraus-Anderson History

J.L. Robinson Company founded, Minneapolis

Laying the Foundation

1902

Goodfellow’s Dry Goods Co., Minneapolis flagship operation that is today known as Target Corporation

1907

St. Thomas Hospital, Minneapolis – first hospital in the Fairview Health system

1913

Chemistry Building, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

1923

In addition to building the Northwest National Life office in 1923, Kraus-Anderson completely renovated the historic building in 2012.

1929

Robinson retired and sold the company to Mathew Kraus and Amos Andersen, who renamed the company Kraus-Andersen and later, Kraus-Anderson

1933

Lloyd Engelsma joined Kraus-Anderson as estimator and office manager. He would go on to purchase the company a few years later.

1949

KSTP-TV, Minneapolis-St. Paul, became the first television station in the Upper Midwest

1951

Miracle Mile Shopping Center, St. Louis Park, MN, became the Twin Cities’ first suburban shopping center

1955

Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, Minnesota was the first hospital in the west suburbs of Minneapolis

Fostering Trust

1961

Southtown Shopping Center – Bloomington’s largest shopping center (at the time) was anchored by the largest Montgomery Wards department store in the nation

1972

Control Data Corporate Headquarters, Bloomington – engineered an innovative slipform technique to speed the construction of the supercomputer complex, built to accommodate 2,500 employees

1972-1979

Kraus-Anderson launched diverse operations, including Kraus-Anderson Insurance (1972), Kraus-Anderson Mortgage (1973), Kraus-Anderson Realty (1978), Kraus-Anderson Advertising (1979), each designed to build on Kraus-Anderson’s efficiencies.

1975

Guided by Lloyd Engelsma’s leadership and entrepreneurial spirit, by the 1970s Kraus-Anderson was growing into a multifaceted enterprise, managing construction projects throughout the nation and venturing into new opportunities from real estate development and ownership to insurance and advertising. In this rare 1975 interview, Lloyd shares some of that progress with WCCO-TV newsman Bob Potter.

Grounded in Midwestern Ingenuity

1980

Pillsbury Center, Minneapolis – this double office tower project was expedited through careful coordination of workers and resources within one square block of busy downtown Minneapolis

1980s

KA Developments extend to Colorado, Florida and Hawaii developments

Collaboration & Commitment

1985

Canterbury Downs, Shakopee, Minnesota – teamwork helped Kraus-Anderson to the on-time completion of the 390-acre racetrack complex just 15 months after being selected as contractor

1988

Ceresota Block renovation, Minneapolis – transformation of vacant grain elevators to upscale hotels and housing spurred on the Mississippi Riverfront Renaissance that continues to this day

Since 1991

Kraus-Anderson has provided construction management services on over 400 Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport projects, totaling over $1.4 billion in construction value

1997

Bruce Engelsma named Chairman, Kraus-Anderson Companies

1998

Cabela’s begins national expansion with KA. Kraus-Anderson would go on to complete new stores and remodels for the retail client for over 25 years and in 25 states.

2003

Westwood Elementary School constructed, Zimmerman, MN – first school project to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)

2008

Cub Foods Phalen constructed, St. Paul – One of the first groceries in the nation to achieve LEED Gold certification.

2010

U.S. Land Port of Entry constructed, Warroad, MN — The project became the most honored of Government Services Administration projects named that year, earning recognition for design, construction and sustainability.

2011

Sanford Center constructed, Bemidji, MN- The 193,000 s.f. arena and convention center positions Bemidji for major conferences and national acts, and provides a home for Bemidji State University hockey.

2012

430 Oak Grove opens – 90 years after building the Northwestern National Life Insurance building, Kraus-Anderson returned to purchase and redevelop the four-story building into distinctive apartments. Working with historic tax credit funding, Kraus-Anderson thoughtfully repurposed the Beaux Arts building to honor its heritage and adding modern amenities and comforts to suit today’s needs.

Since 2013

Kraus-Anderson Bike Duluth Festival. KA is founder and title sponsor of this community celebration showcasing the region’s dynamic cycling trails and outdoor activities, with proceeds going to area nonprofits.

2014

Gundersen Health Legacy Building completed. Construction of the 430,000 s.f. facility was completed on the active hospital campus over the course of 36 months. The new facility achieves exemplary sustainability goals including 100 percent energy independence.

2014

Alexandria High School constructed. KA provided prereferendum services as well as construction management services for this LEED Silver, leading edge learning facility serving students grades 9-12.

2016-2018

KA Block Development – This master-planned, mixed use development represents Kraus-Anderson’s 360-degree real estate capabilities, including ownership, development, design, construction and leasing and management services.

2016

Watford City High School completed, ND – Constructed by KA to provide modern, flexible, high-tech learning environment in the fastest-growing county in the U.S.

2017

Construction begins on the Hilton Downtown Rochester for longtime client Titan Development. The 20-story hotel is among the first projects under the City of Rochester’s Destination Medical Center (DMC) initiative, one of the largest economic development initiatives in the nation.

2018

TCO Performance Center completed – Constructed by Kraus-Anderson, this world-class headquarters and training facility is home to the Minnesota Vikings.
