Gundersen Tomah: Building Accessible Healthcare
Accessible healthcare is key to a healthy community, and longtime Kraus-Anderson client, Gundersen Health System, has been expanding its services throughout the region to meet those needs. Its biggest addition in Wisconsin, the Gundersen Tomah Clinic, combined several services under one roof for western Wisconsin residents.
Inside the Gundersen Tomah Clinic
The two-story, 77,000-square-foot medical office building combines behavioral health, vision, family medicine, renal dialysis and a cancer center, allowing patients to receive services at one location. One of the biggest additions at the new clinic is the Gundersen Comprehensive Cancer Center, which allows patients to receive their cancer care, including a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for radiation treatments, at the Tomah Cancer Center. Bringing these expansive services to Tomah was critical, particularly for radiation treatments, which are often daily. Before the Tomah clinic opened, patients had to drive upwards of 90 minutes to La Crosse, Wisconsin, to receive care. Designed by HSR Associates, the Tomah Clinic is offering critical access that helps eliminate barriers to treatment.
Other services include dental, family medicine, general surgery, imaging, lab, OB/GYN, oncology, orthopedics, podiatry, vision and a Gundersen pharmacy inside the clinic with drive-thru service. Sustainability was a high priority in the facility, and the project features a geothermal well system, 800+ solar panel array, and a tesla battery system for emergency power. The new campus also features walking trails and gardens as part of Gundersen’s invitation to the whole community to shift perspective towards well-being and healing instead of sickness.
The Gundersen project construction coincided with another hospital on the adjacent site, which required extensive communication and coordination between both the construction managers and design teams on both sites. Because it was a shared site, coordination of sitework, landscaping, and paving operations were critical to the safety and efficiency of both projects. The entire project team worked closely to ensure the design was going to properly support the end-users and keep with Gundersen’s high standard of patient care.
