Cinco de Mayo: How Our Communities are Getting Involved
Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner; did you know that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day? Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican victory at the battle of Puebla.
The battle of Puebla took place in 1862, where a small Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated the larger and better equipped French forces under Emperor Napoleon III. Despite being a small victory in the overall struggle against French occupation, it symbolized Mexican resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
This day is a reminder of Mexico’s determination to defend its sovereignty and freedom. Cinco de Mayo serves as a celebration of courage, defiance, and the enduring spirit of the Mexican people. It’s a time to honor the bravery of those who fought for liberty and to reflect on the ongoing struggle for independence and justice.
As we commemorate Cinco de Mayo, let’s not only enjoy the festivities but also take a moment to appreciate the rich history and significance behind this day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate Mexican heritage and to recognize the enduring legacy of those who have paved the way for a better future.
Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated in the US whereas Mexico’s Independence Day is more heavily celebrated in Mexico. If you would like to celebrate Mexican culture, there are many local Cinco de Mayo events being held in the coming days in the communities we live and work in.
