Project Snapshot: Sanford Bemidji Medical Center
Q & A with KA Project manager Pat Weerts
Few industries are more dynamic than the healthcare industry, and Kraus-Anderson works closely with healthcare providers to plan and manage a spectrum of construction work to address continual needs for treatment, technology upgrades, dedicated and flexible spaces, and acute care needs. Here’s a look at some of the work taking place at Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji.
What’s Happening?
Renovations to the existing medical center building, which was originally constructed in 1979. A previous addition was done in 2005.
What’s included?
Conversion of two-patient rooms to private rooms and addition of patient rooms throughout the second and fourth floor floors. Four additional beds in ICU. Relocation and expansion of telemetry. Relocate acute rehab.
Scheduled completion:
First quarter 2022.
What are some of the measures taken while working in occupied hospital facility?
All work is in occupied spaces and most of it is in high risk areas. We are maintaining infection controls including use of sheetrock walls, polycarbonate shelters, continuous ongoing cleaning, negative air pressure, Hepa filtration and other measures to keep both patients and staff healthy and safe. We also have weekly meetings to review all Infection Control Risk Assessment ( ICRA) permits to ensure we have analyzed and talked through the risks with the Sanford Risk Control Team for the areas we are either working in or will be working in. The Sanford Risk team also inspects the space a few times a week to ensure we are doing our job of keeping the patients and staff safe.
As several areas are moving around, what are the considerations for the MEP components?
Med gas shut downs needed to be coordinated as we expanded the services on the 4th floor. Disruption avoidance plans are important in keeping the Hospital operational..
What else is on the horizon for this client?
Plans for construction of a new and expanded 56,000 SF Heart & Vascular Center had to be put on hold due to COVID, but we’re now anticipating construction starting next year. We’re also currently in preconstruction planning for their new Behavioral Health facility, which we hope to begin yet this year.
What else?
KA has worked with this client since 1992, including the 2004-2005 addition; the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center, which opened in 2013; and the Joe Lueken Cancer Center, completed in 2018. https://www.bemidjipioneer.com/4491816-new-house-healing-sanford-health-welcomes-community-new-cancer-center
