Kraus-Anderson begins construction on new $94 million high school in Owatonna

May 10, 2021

3-story school also features new football stadium, athletic fields, tennis courts, gymnasium and auditorium

OWATONNA, Minn.  (May 2021) — Kraus-Anderson (KA) has begun construction on a new $94 million high school located at 1455 18th Street SE in Owatonna, Minn.  The project is part of a $112 million district bond referendum, which voters passed in November 2019.

Designed by Wold Architects and Engineers, the three-story, 317,000-square-foot high school, which will accommodate 1,600 students, includes new classrooms, state-of-the-art industrial arts labs and shop spaces, as well as an 825-seat auditorium and a large commons/cafeteria space in the center of the building.

Located on a 90-acre site with parking lots for 890 vehicles, the project also includes a 3,451-seat football stadium, four-court gymnasium, eight tennis courts, four soccer/lacrosse fields, two softball fields, two baseball fields, and a synthetic turf field and full track at the stadium. The site also will have four maintenance storage buildings for athletics.

Construction will feature a combination of structural steel and precast concrete.  The exterior facade will be comprised of brick and metal panels along with a substantial amount of glazing to bring abundant natural light into the building. Interior finishes will include terrazzo flooring throughout the commons and fitness areas, prefinished interior panels in the auditorium, and numerous locations of tile, hardwood panels and metal panels covering the walls and column wraps.

Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.

Owatonna High School is one of dozens of major K-12 construction projects KA will work on this year during its “Summer Sprint,” a critical, concentrated time during the summer months when school is not in session and when crews can perform work that ranges from new school construction to upgrades to deferred maintenance projects.

KA continues to lead the field of regional education construction projects and is currently ranked 12th in the nation in the construction of K-12 facilities by Building Design and Construction magazine.  Over the past five years, KA has completed over $1 billion in K-12 projects.   KA’s comprehensive school construction services include facility analysis and budget approaches, leading to informed and successful referendum initiatives.
