Kraus-Anderson completes extensive expansion at Irondale High School
December 11, 2020
Improvements were part of a 2017 $165 million bond referendum
NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. (December 2020) – Kraus-Anderson (KA) has completed a $24.7 million expansion at Irondale High School, located at 2425 Long Lake Road in New Brighton, Minn. Construction was part of a $165 million bond referendum passed by voters in 2017. Irondale High School was the second phase of a three-phase, district-wide project for Mounds View Public Schools that includes 12 school buildings.
Designed by Wold Architects and Engineers, the extensive 77,700-square-foot additions feature six new flexible classrooms, break-out spaces, science lab and a contemporary 25,700-square-foot, 650-seat auditorium with dressing rooms and scene shops for use by students and community groups. Construction also included the removal of the pool to accommodate a new fitness center and multipurpose area.
Two classrooms were renovated and relocated, and hallway intersections were renovated to improve student traffic flow and to provide flexible learning areas for student use. Additions also included four open common spaces for students to collaborate, a large gathering space for community events, as well as a new 5,600-square-foot administration office.
Outside improvements included an underground retention system and pond, major utility and storm water work, and parking lot reconstruction and repaving. The building’s exterior was updated and a new 7,200-square-foot courtyard and 2,400-square-foot self-standing storage building was added.
KA continues to lead the field of regional education construction projects and is currently ranked 12th in the nation in the construction of K-12 facilities by Building Design and Construction magazine. Over the past five years, KA has completed over $1 billion in K-12 projects. KA’s comprehensive school construction services include facility analysis and budget approaches, leading to informed and successful referendum initiatives.
