Punk Rock Chic: Modist Brewing Co. opens $2 million new event space in Minneapolis’ North Loop this weekend
Open houses scheduled to showcase two-story event space that allows more opportunity for gathering, connection to the community
Modist Brewing Co. has completed the $2 million renovation of its 7,000-square-foot North Loop headquarters and taproom. The renovation includes new event space, quality control lab, and employee workplace.
The event space will be open to the public on Saturday, November 18. Modist invites the public to view the new space during several open houses:
- Saturday, November 18: 6 to 8 p.m.
- Friday, November 24: 3-5 p.m.
- Saturday, November 25: 12-3 p.m.
The Minneapolis studio of Perkins&Will designed a two-story event space, mezzanine and catwalk that can accommodate 120 people for corporate and private events. Perkins&Will thoughtfully designed the space to be as inclusive and welcoming as possible, with the intention of celebrating the creativity of the community.
Shying away from the masculine feel of a typical brewery, the design reflects “punk rock chic” and includes bold colors, neon sculpture lights, dichroic glass that changes color as you pass by, and glitter concrete epoxy flooring. The mirrored ceilings create energy and excitement by adding depth and creating unique views of the second-level event space from the street. Full glass walls separate the event space from the taproom and brewery, allowing sky-high visibility into the taproom and brewery so everyone can feel connected to the Modist culture.
Also included in the renovation is Modist’s quality control lab, a dedicated space for the team to test and refine its recipes, and a modern workplace full of natural light that supports future employee growth.
“We design for the greater good and we’re passionate about engaging in purpose-driven work,” said Jennifer Christiaansen, Perkins&Will Managing Director. “We intentionally promote and activate spaces that are joyful, places for people to gather, and opportunities to feel that human connection. The more we can keep people here in the North Loop and engaged with their community, the better.”
“Events are a major part of our business, and we used to resort to our warehouse to host events,” said Daniel Paul Wellendorf, Co-Owner of Modist. “Now we can bring so much of the community together on-site for anything from corporate events, bridal showers, and doggie birthdays. The opportunities are endless.”
Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson led the construction, which began in March 2023.
“It’s exciting to be part of a construction team on a project that so creatively transforms an underutilized building space for contemporary use in the dynamic North Loop neighborhood,” said Jared Neiers, Kraus-Anderson Project Manager. “Modist Brewing has truly created a fun, unique space that reflects the community and its values.”
